EV charging, explained in numbers

If you're comparing quotes for EV charger installation in Cambridge, these are the four decisions that matter. Learn them, and competence becomes easy to recognise.

  1. 01 7kW or 22kW

    Most Cambridge homes run on a single-phase supply, which carries a 7kW charger comfortably. A 22kW unit needs three-phase, which few houses have. We measure your supply at the survey — before recommending, not after installing.

  2. 02 A dedicated circuit, calculated

    A charger draws its full 32A for hours at a time — nothing else in the house behaves like that. It gets its own circuit, sized against a load calculation of everything already on the board, so the whole installation stays inside what your supply can carry.

  3. 03 PEN fault protection, plainly

    If the neutral conductor in the street ever failed, the metal parts of a car on charge could become live. Every charger we fit detects that condition and disconnects automatically — and we test that protection and record the result.

  4. 04 The DNO notification

    Your Distribution Network Operator has to be told a charger is connected to their network. It's a form most people have never heard of. We file it as part of the job, and the confirmation arrives with your certificate.
